Discover my tips for things to do in Copenhagen Denmark
Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and one of my favorite cities in Scandinavia. I have been visiting Copenhagen on a regular base, and during every visit I get to discover new places, museums and restaurants. Enjoy my personal tips for discovering Copenhagen.
Stroll through Nyhavn – top things to do in Copenhagen
One of the famous things to do in Copenhagen Denmark is to visit Nyhavn. Even though it is always busy here, it is a pleasant place with numerous restaurants and bars. Moreover, here you can take the best photos of Copenhagen with its typical colored houses and wooden boats. Nyhavn Canal was built in 1673 as a connection between the city center and the sea. The famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Anderson lived at number 2 for a few years and wrote his first stories here. Several boats depart from Nyhavn for a tour through the city’s canals.
Ready to discover Copenhagen and its things to do from the water? You can book a boat tour through the canals here. Want to take a tour in a smaller group with an electric boat? Then have a look at this tour.
Discover Christiania
One of the nicest neighborhoods in Copenhagen Denmark is Freetown Christiania, located in the Christianshavn district. This former military area was squatted in 1971 and declared semi-independent, with its own laws that are separate from the state, at the time.
When you start reading about this neighborhood you will soon come across its open trade of cannabis on Pusher Street (ended in 2024). But the best thing about Christiana is the cozy, creative atmosphere, the pieces of art, and the walk you can take around the lake. When passing the houses, you realize that people here have best of both worlds: Living in the vibes of a village but having the cosmopolitan city life around the corner. Different events and concerts take place here in the summer months, so keep an eye on the schedule.
Enjoy the view from Rundetårn
Are you looking for a beautiful view of Copenhagen? Then make sure you visit Rundetårn (“round tower”). Yo do not climb to the 35-metre-high top via steps, but via a path that ascends almost 200 metres, leading upwards with 7.5 turns. From the top you look out over the many spires of the city. The tower also contains the oldest observatory in Europe, which is still in use.
The evenings in Tivoli – top things to do in Copenhagen
Tivoli has been around since 1843 and is one of the most romantic amusement parks in Europe. It is one of the best places to visit and things to do in Copenhagen on a summer evening. But not to stand in line for one of the many activities, but to immerse yourself in the atmosphere. Tivoli is the meeting place for a drink, meal or concert. Especially in summer when everything is decorated and lit. Keep an eye on the schedules. Performances and concerts by major artists take place regularly.
Do you want to visit Tivoli in Copenhagen? Then book your tickets here in advance, so you don’t have to stand in line.
Taste the Nordic Cuisine
One of the top reasons to visit Copenhagen Denmark is the fantastic food. It is not without a reason that Copenhagen has several restaurants that have been awarded a Michelin star, such as The Alchemist, Kong Hans, Geranium, AOC, Kadeau, Mielcke & Hurtigkarlen and the world-famous Noma. But you don’t have to dine at star level to experience Nordic Cuisine. Many places in the city offer great dishes with special attention to fresh and organic. Be sure to try smørrebrød, open-faced sandwiches topped with different ingredients. My favorite one is the shooting star that comes with fish, shrimp and asparagus on danish rye bread. As a true Dane you drink schnapps, beer, or in my case a glass of wine along with it.
Rosenborg castle – cultural things to do in Copenhagen Denmark
One of the cultural things to do in Copenhagen Denmark is without a doubt Rosenborg Slot, a perfect castle that rises above the green city park Kongens Have. Inside, you’ll learn more about 400 years of royal history through an extensive crown jewel collection. But seeing the castle from the outside is just as nice.
Do you want to visit Rosenborg Slot and learn more? You can book your priority tickets here.
Visit the Little Mermaid – famous things to do in Copenhagen
If you haven’t been here, you haven’t been to Copenhagen, the saying goes. The Little Mermaid, the famous statue that sits on a rock and looks out over the water, from the stories of Hans Christian Anderson, is one of the most famous sights and things to do in Copenhagen Denmark.
In 1836, Hans Christian Anderson, wrote the well-known story about a young mermaid princess who is willing to give up her life in the sea for a life as a human. Unfortunately, the Danish writer’s fairy tale ends less happy than the stories that followed, such as in the popular Disney cartoon. It is a good idea to pay a short visit to Den lille havfrue and take a photo. But don’t expect too much from it. The statue is small and it is always busy.
Find a spot in Kongens Have
One of the best city parks can be found in Copenhagen Denmark. Kongens Have is the meeting place for many Copenhageners. You can go for a walk, sit in the sun or have a drink at the Orangerie. Recommended!
Rent a bike
Cycling is the perfect way to discover the many sights and things to do in Copenhagen. Just like Amsterdam, Copenhagen is a real biking city with many special cycle paths. Moreover, as a cyclist you have most of the citys bridges all to yourself. You can rent a bicycle in one of the bikes shops or book a tour.
Do you want to explore Copenhagen by bike with a local guide? This is an interesting tour.
Museums in Copenhagen – 6 tips
Copenhagen has more than sixty different museums. Most likely that there is something that is of your interests. This is a selection of my favorite museums and cultural things to do in Copenhagen Denmark.
Ny Carlsberg Glyptoteket
I love walking through spacious museums with a lot of light. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptoteket museum consists of a large atrium, surrounded by high halls with countless statues and sculptures from ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire. The statues are displayed against blue, yellow and red painted walls, making them even better to observe. This museum is a great place to get inspired or to wander around in your own world. On the first and second floor there is a exhibition with French and Danish art. Don’t forget to have a look at the roof terrace for a view over Tivoli. The museum offerts free entries every last Wednesday of the month.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Do you like modern art? Then the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, located 45 minutes from Copenhagen in Denmark, is one of the best things to do and visit. This museum is known for its world-famous exhibitions, Danish architecture and seaside sculpture park. Guaranteed that you will leave here full of inspiration.
Design and architecture
Copenhagen is famous for being a design and architecture city. In the design museum you are taken on a journey through the world of design in an accessible way. What goes into a design? Designers will explain, while you walk past exhibitions full of textiles, interior and fashion. Have you always been interested in Scandinavian architecture? In the modern Danish Architecture Museum everything is about architecture and engineering. The accompanying café offers views over the city.
Other museums
Other museums that are worth vising include the National Museum where you will learn more about Denmark through art and history. The Statens Museum for Art contains major collections of Danish and International artists.
Discover cool neighborhoods and its things to do in Copenhagen – 3 tips
Copenhagen has several cool neighborhoods, each with its own sights, things to do and vibes. You will find small boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and cocktail bars in Nørrebro. The famous cemetery, where many prominent Danes are buried, is a meeting place for many Danes here. Osterbrø has great brunch spots and parks. Kødbyen is located in the former working-class district of Vesterbrø, behind the train station, and is called the meatpacking district of Copenhagen. There are old warehouses and factories that have been transformed into cool restaurants and bars. Moreover, there are food stalls, attracting Copenhageners on summer evenings
Brygge island
Make sure to visit Brygge Island, especially in the summer. Stock up on some snacks and drinks and settle down on the quay at Brygge Island, just like a real Copenhagener. You can also take a dip in the water here. Along the quay there are places that are specially marked out for swimmers.
A recommended activity in the summer is a kayak trip through the waters of Copenhagen. Curious? Check out this tour.
The libraries
It is worth taking a look at the Kongelige Bibliotek, the largest library in Northern Europe with around 6 million books. The complex consists of the Black Diamond, a modern glass building with a sleek design, and a historic building with an accompanying library garden. It is hard to find a bigger contrast. The Black Diamond is an impressive piece of architecture, offering great views from the roof terrace. In the courtyard of the library, you can take a seat on one of the benches and enjoy the surroundings. Both buildings are connected by a glass bridge.
Stroll trough the botanical garden
One of the things I like to do in Copenhagen is to visit the botanical garden. The Copenhagen Botanical Garden has more than 13,000 plants and trees and is within walking distance of the city center.
The royal palaces
One of the things you want to do when in Copennhagen Denmark is to walk past Amalienborg, the royal palace. At 12 noon you can experience the changing of the guard here. The flag tells you whether the royal family is in the palace or not.
Foodmarkets Copenhagen – 3 tips
In no other city have I seen as many cool food markets as in Copenhagen. Especially when the sun shines, everyone comes together here for a bite and drink. The most famous market is the Torvehallerne, but the nicest are the smaller ones that you encounter while walking through the city. My favorite place is Mikkeller an Papirøen, both located on the water.
Remarkable buildings – things to do in Copenhagen Denmark
Other sights and things to do in Copenhagen worth including in your itinerary are Christianborgs Slott, which now houses the Danish parliament. And views can be observed from The Marble Churches, inspired by St Peter’s in Rome, and the 95-metre-high Vor Frelsers Kirke, Our Saviors Church.
