The coffee triangle is one of my favorite regions of Colombia because of its beautiful mountains, seas of coffee fields, countless shades of green and special species of birds. In the heart of the Risaralda Valley, lies Sazagua Boutique Hotel, a beautiful place to stay, with so much attention to design, service and detail. Here you can completely unwind in your own little paradise and be at the best places in the region in no time. In this article I’ll tell you more about Sazagua boutique hotel, near Pereira and give you tips for places to visit in the Colombia coffee region.
Welcome to Sazagua boutique hotel – Pereira Colombia
Sazagua boutique hotel is located in a tropical garden, surrounded by flowers and hummingbirds, near Pereira in Colombia. The former finca has been transformed into a boutique hotel with 18 completely different rooms, spread over the main building and a number of lodges on the grounds. There is a spa where you can go for traditional treatments, a nice pool and a restaurant where you enjoy high-end dishes. And in the evening, the grounds are fairily lit!
Sazagua boutique hotel is a chic place but exudes love and passion on all sides. It’s a family business, proud of its land and culture. And you can see that in the level of service, the details and the friendliness of the staff.

The rooms
Each room at Sazagua boutique hotel is unique, designed by Colombian architect Marcelo Villegas, who is known for his designs with guadua (a species of bamboo). All the rooms at Sazagua are special and beautiful, but the very best for me is the Masinga Lodge.
Masinga means sacred place in the indigenous Quimbaya culture and this lodge is called like that for a reason. As soon as you walk in here, you find yourself in paradise. Masinga Lodge consists of several cottages: A bedroom, a living room, a Turkish bath and an entrance with two bathrooms. All are made of bamboo and other natural materials.
The lodge is surrounded by mighty jungle trees and water with carp in it. And a highlight is the private jacuzzi, which is also illuminated in the evening. Believe me, you never want to leave this room anymore. The Porra lodge, the villas and garden suites are also little heavens on earth. But even the rooms and suites in the main building are very nice.
Tip: Order your breakfast in the morning from your bed. The staff will make sure that it is ready for you in your own living room.
Facilities at Sazagua Boutique Hotel
Spa
Have you ever heard of a coffee spa treatment? A variety of treatments are offered at Sazagua’s spa. But a coffee massage is just not to be missed here. First you get a relaxing massage, with oil made from coffee. Followed by an extensive scrubbing session. My skin had never felt so soft. Besides that the delicious coffee aroma will linger around you for the rest of the day.
Restaurant – Tributo
The restaurant Tributo is located on the property, in the tropical garden, surrounded by flowers, greenery and birds that the Colombian coffee region is so famous for. You can have a nice lunch and dinner there, with ingredients coming from Colombia. There are meat and fish dishes but also fresh pastas, burgers and good wines. This together with the excellent service ensures that you do not have to leave Sazagua.
Would you like to have breakfast, lunch or dinner in your room? Then all you have to do is send a whatsapp message and everything will be served to your room.
Swimming pool
Sazagua has a swimming pool with jacuzzi. Since I only stayed in Sazagua for a short amount of time and had aprivate jacuzzi at my disposal, I didn’t use it myself. But there is nothing like taking a dip here at the end of the day.
Things to do in the Colombian coffee region
Visit a coffee plantation and coffee finca
When you are in the Colombian coffee region, a visit to a coffee plantation can’t be missed. Sazagua boutique hotel helps you get a unique experience at a coffee farm where you get to know the entire coffee process: From seed to cup. I myself visited Finca Cafe Don Manolo, located just outside Pereira, with a view of the city.
During a visit you get a tour of the plantation and taste, among other things, that the coffee bean is sweet. This is followed by several demonstrations of all the steps involved in the coffee production process. From picking, weighing, drying, to hulling and grinding. You’ll also learn how small-scale farms work and why most good coffee doesn’t stay in Colombia but is used for export. Don’t Colombians love quality coffee? You can hardly imagine it!
It is interesting to see how the fincas approach coffee like wine. A small difference in the coffee process creates a completely new taste. Afterwards you will experience an extensive coffee tasting, where the owners prepare the coffee in different ways. This is so you can actually taste the differences. And even I, as a non-coffee drinker, found the flavors surprisingly delicious. Not only is the explanation interesting, but also the atmosphere and the surroundings make Cafe Don Manolo a must-visit.
Risaralda is part of the coffee triangle in Colombia, together with the province of Caldas and Quindío. I recently went on amazing road trip in this area, visiting numerous sights and staying in three unique hotels. In the next article you’ll read more about my road trip through the coffee region, the itinerary and hotels.
Visit coffee village Filandia
Filanda is one of the nicest coffee villages in the Colombian coffee region and just a little less crowded than Salento. In Filandia there are streets with colored houses, boutique stores and many cozy coffee shops, with the best coffee.
Make sure to have a look in the Centro de cestería, “Bejuco Al Canasto” (the museum of the coffee baskets). It is very small but gives a nice impression. In addition, take time to try the many local dishes and specialties. What about ice cream made from tropical fruits like guanábana and chirimoya? Or empanadas (filled pastry rolls), the sweet obleas (waffles) along with the local drink aguardiente that you can find in every bar.
