Mompox is a cute little town, coming straight out of a Gabriel García Márquez book. It is also called little Cartagena because of the beautiful colonial buildings and nice atmosphere. It’s a hidden gem in Colombia and not many people discovered this place yet. But in Mompox, you won’t find a shop or restaurant at every corner. You have to look a little further and once you find a place, you have to see if they are actually open at the specified times. But that is what gives Mompox its charm. With this list, you will know exactly where to go and find the best and nicest restaurants in Mompox Colombia.
The best restaurants in Mompox Colombia
1. Café 1700
You could easily walk past this place because it doesn’t stand out from the outside. The entrance is in the building with the yellow poles and large windows. It is nicely decorated and wonderfully cool inside, wich is something you are going to be very happy with, (keeping in mind the hot temperatures in Mompox). From your seat you stare out through the colonial windows. They don’t have lunch or dinner yet, but they do have nice cups of tea and coffee. Click here for the adress and location.
2. Sol de Agua | Small restaurant Mompox Colombia
Sol de Agua has two tables inside and a few more on the terrace on the boulevard. Small but nice! The menu is limited, but it’s a good place for a simple lunch or a cup of coffee. The service is not too fast, so don’t be in a hurry.
3. Ambrosia, one of the nicest restaurants in Mompox Colombia
If you want a menu with more culinary food options, Ambrosia is probably your best restaurant in Mompox Colombia. The menu consists of pasta, fish dishes and good salads. Ambrosia is located on Calle 19, at the Parque de la Libertad.
4. The plaza
For me this is the plaza, but the official name is called Parque de la Inmaculada Concepcion. At the end of the afternoon the restaurant staff is placing and preparing its tables and chairs on the square. There are a few restaurants with a simple but tasty menu. In the evening this is the meeting point for locals. Make sure to be early, if you want to find a table.
5. Crepes de’la villa
For the most delicious crepes, visit Crepes de’la villa. A few plastic tables are located on the corner of the plaza. In the shade! They don’t open until the end of the day.
6. Fuerte San Anselmo, one of the best restaurants in Mompox Colombia
This is for sure one of the best restaurants in Mompox Colombia. Fuerte San Anselmo is just always a good option and especially when you are going with a group. Upon entering, it does not look that special, but if you continue you will arrive in a beautiful courtyard with wooden tables, nice decoration and plants. The menu consists mainly of delicious pizzas, so you should not be looking for the local Colombian kitchen when coming here.
7. Comedor Costeño
An all-time favorite in Mompox. You eat inside, or outside at the riverfront. The kitchen serves simple but delicious Colombian dishes. Please note that it is only open for lunch. Comedor Costeño is located on the boulevard, just past Parque de la Inmaculada Concepcion.
Santa Cruz de Mompox is full with picturesque squares, colored churches, pastel-colored houses, beautiful facades and interior gardens with endless flowers. In the next article, I’m sharing my tips for what to do in Mompox Colombia, including some lovely hotels.
8. La Isla Cerveceria
When I pass this place, I always regret not drinking beers. This place, with so many beer options, looks so nice! La Isla Cerveceria is located on the Plaza San Fransisco Mompox!
9. Have a drink with the locals
On the boulevard, especially around the Santa Barbára plaza, there are many wooden huts with local bars. You will be invited by locals immediately to have a drink and talk about life! The perfect way to blend into the real Mompox! I still visit some friends, I once made, when I am in Mompox.
