Visit the caves
The area around Archidona in the Napo province of Ecuador has numerous caves that you can visit. During the time of the Spanish conquest, these caves were used by indigenous people to hide. Nowadays you can visit some of these caves and it is very worthwhile. We visited the cave of Humanti, named after an important leader and fighter against the Spanish.
With a flashlight on your head and your swimming suit on, you enter the pitch-black cave accompanied by a local guide. You walk through the water up to knee height, past stalagmites and stalagtites that have formed unique formations. At certain points you climb on a rope from one side to the other. There are also places that you have to crawl. The highlight of the tour is the waterfall, located deep in the cave. You hear the water splashing down, and if you dare you can try to hit the four meter deep ground here.
It’s nice that the cave is managed by a local community. After your visit, a cup of Guayusa tea, served in a traditional cup called, is waiting for you. Guayusa is a tree that grows in the Amazon of Ecuador. The leaves are rich in minerals and vitamins, and contain the necessary caffeine, providing an energy boost.
